Tooth Extractions Q&A

When might you need a tooth extraction?

Tooth extraction is a deliberate tooth removal performed by a dentist, rather than losing a tooth naturally or because of injury. It's a standard dental procedure. Some of the most common reasons for tooth extraction include:

  • Overcrowding
  • Baby teeth removal
  • Excessive tooth decay
  • Preparation for a dental prosthesis
  • Gum disease
  • Tooth infection
  • Tooth or bone trauma
  • Wisdom tooth removal

Regular checkups with Dr. Kern catches many of these issues early on and can prevent them from progressing to where tooth removal is the only option.

What are the different types of tooth extraction?

There are two types of tooth extraction: simple and surgical.

Simple extraction

A simple extraction is a straightforward tooth removal using forceps. Most people need just a local anesthetic for pain prevention, and they remain awake during the procedure.

Surgical extraction

Dentists perform surgical extractions when the tooth being removed is impacted or partly visible. You may have just local and intravenous (IV) anesthesia to numb the area and put you into a drowsy state, or you may need general anesthesia so that you're unconscious throughout. Your provider removes the tooth by cutting into the gum, sometimes even the bone.

If you need a tooth extraction, Dr. Kern talks you through the process and explains your options.

How to prepare for a tooth extraction?

When scheduling your tooth extraction, Dr. Kern assesses your health by asking several questions. You can prepare in advance by coming to the appointment with:

  • Information on your health history and current health status
  • An updated list of medications, vitamins, and supplements you currently take
  • Details of any upcoming scheduled surgeries

On the day, make sure you have someone available to drive you home if you're having a general anesthetic, and wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothes. If you wake up on the day with sickness, nausea, a cough, or a cold, call the office in case you have to reschedule.

If you need a tooth out, you're in the best hands when you partner with Dr. Kern. They have years of experience in performing tooth extractions and provide exceptional aftercare. Find out more or schedule a consultation today. Call the practice or request an appointment online.
